Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. The company integrates hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate to deploy and scale robotic systems in real-world environments.
As People Operations Director, you will own the end-to-end employee lifecycle, from pre-onboarding through offboarding, managing critical processes including I-9 verification, background checks, benefits delivery, workforce compliance, and audits. You will lead two teams: a People Operations Center of Excellence focused on process design, governance, compliance, and communications, and a shared services team delivering high-volume employee support against clear SLA and CSAT targets.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, improving, and governing core people processes across the organization
- Leading and developing two direct teams while staying hands-on
- Partnering closely with Payroll as it integrates into the People organization, with potential to expand direct ownership
- Deepening HRIS capabilities, particularly in Workday, and building automation across the employee lifecycle
- Redesigning processes built for a smaller company to support significant headcount growth
- Establishing an operating rhythm grounded in metrics, efficiency, and continuous improvement
- Supporting complex, multi-location operations serving frontline, corporate, and executive populations
The role is based in San Francisco with five-day-per-week onsite expectations. Atoms is a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment focused on solving one of the defining challenges of our time—bringing automation into the physical world.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of People Operations experience, including leadership of core People Operations and a shared services or HR operations delivery team
- Experience operating in complex organizations supporting frontline, corporate, and executive populations across multiple locations, entities, or countries
- Demonstrated experience in both scaled, mature operations within large organizations and scrappy, high-growth environments where processes are being built
- Depth in HRIS (Workday preferred), automation, and building efficient, metrics-driven operations
- Experience leading offshore or shared services delivery teams; captive offshore team and payroll operations experience are strong pluses
- Ability to stay hands-on while leading and developing a team; comfort thriving in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments
