Check is rebuilding payroll infrastructure by powering businesses with embedded payroll APIs. The People Associate role is a hybrid position based in San Francisco, reporting to the Head of People and partnering closely with the Lead Recruiter and Sr. People Ops Partner. Key responsibilities include anchoring the SF office expansion through office management (supplies, vendors, equipment, potential office moves), organizing team lunches and in-person events, and driving candidate scheduling and communication across interview loops using Ashby. You'll lead the candidate-to-new-hire transition, managing offer letters, background checks, equipment provisioning, systems access, and first-day experiences. You'll support core HR processes including HRIS data hygiene, audit preparation, review cycle compensation changes, and backup support for payroll and benefits administration. Across the distributed Check team, you'll organize cultural touchpoints and events—leading in-person gatherings in SF, supporting the annual company retreat (Chexico), and designing virtual experiences for remote employees. Ideal candidates bring 3+ years of directly relevant experience in recruiting coordination (scheduling, ATS management, candidate communication) and people operations (payroll/benefits, HRIS administration, office management). You should demonstrate meticulous process execution in sensitive workflows, real event planning experience, and an AI adopter mindset with tools integrated into daily workflows. Familiarity with Check's tech stack (Ashby, Eddy, Notion, Claude, Checkr, eVerify, Jumpchain, Allwhere, Employee Navigator, Tilt, Windmill, KnowBe4, Google, Slack) is preferred. Bonus experience includes startup background (ideally fintech), direct payroll processing or comp administration, and office setup or move coordination. This role requires at least 2 days/week in-office presence. Check offers a distributed team model with offices in NYC and SF, regular team offsites, and an annual 3-day spring company retreat.
