Cognition AI is building Devin, the first AI software engineer, and is seeking a Payroll Operations Manager to own and scale the company's global payroll function. This is a critical operational role supporting the company's next stage of growth.
You will be responsible for end-to-end payroll operations across the U.S. and international jurisdictions, ensuring employees, contractors, and commission recipients are paid accurately, compliantly, and on time. Key responsibilities include:
- Owning global payroll operations across multiple countries, managing domestic and international payroll tax compliance, withholding, deposits, filings, and reconciliations.
- Building scalable systems, automation, and controls that enable payroll to handle significant volume growth without proportional effort increases.
- Managing vendor and partner relationships with payroll providers, EORs, and benefits administrators, holding them to high standards on accuracy and compliance.
- Administering complex and variable compensation including commissions, bonuses, taxable benefits, relocation payments, and other cash and non-cash compensation.
- Running 401(k) contributions, payroll deductions, contractor payments, garnishments, and other benefits administered through payroll systems.
- Partnering cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, People Operations, Tax, and Legal to maintain data integrity, ensure compliance, and deliver a seamless employee experience.
You will need 5+ years of payroll, accounting operations, or finance operations experience with ownership of complex payroll in a high-growth environment. Deep domestic and international payroll expertise is essential, including working knowledge of international payroll tax, EORs, and global payroll providers. Strong command of U.S. payroll tax compliance (federal, state, local withholding, filings, reconciliations, and year-end reporting) is required. Fluency with enterprise payroll platforms such as ADP, Workday, or Rippling is necessary. The role is based in San Francisco with a requirement to work from the office 5 days per week.
