Scale is seeking a Payroll Manager to lead payroll accounting operations under the direction of the Head of Payroll. This role manages technical payroll activities including preparation, maintenance, processing, analysis, and auditing of payroll data and records. You will ensure accuracy and completeness of payroll transactions while leading, training, and providing work direction to internal and external partners. Key responsibilities include overseeing accurate and timely payroll operations (gross pay calculations, deductions, retroactive adjustments, retirement contributions) while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, IRS regulations, and internal policies. You will maintain, audit, and update HR/payroll systems; identify and resolve discrepancies in collaboration with IT and vendors; and ensure data integrity for employee records, benefits, taxes, and annuities. You will manage month-end payroll accounting including journal entries and financial statements in NetSuite, coordinate payroll-related audits and reporting functions for retirement funds, annuities, and benefits, and provide technical training and support to staff. Additional duties include responding to employee and external agency inquiries, composing payroll-related materials and employment verifications, monitoring legislative changes affecting payroll and tax codes, and training and mentoring payroll staff. Required qualifications include 3-5 years of processing experience with ADP Workforce (hourly/salary employees), 3-5 years of international payroll experience with working knowledge of PEO/EOR systems, and 3-5 years of accounting month-end experience including journal entry preparation, NetSuite utilization, and financial statement preparation. You must have strong knowledge of payroll administration, month-end accounting processes, domestic and international payroll laws and regulations, retirement systems (401(k), IRC 125, HSA), tax withholding, and employee benefits. An Associate's degree with coursework in accounting, business, or related field is required. The role requires in-office presence Monday–Thursday each week.
