Tabs is an AI-native revenue platform automating the contract-to-cash lifecycle for modern finance teams. The company has raised $91M from top-tier VCs and is moving billions in gross payment volume onto its own rails.
You'll be the founding Payments Operations Lead, reporting to the VP of Finance, building and owning payment operations from the ground up. This is a strategic role where you'll set standards rather than maintain existing processes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building the function: Select systems, define architecture, and hire the team. You decide what to build versus buy.
- Risk management: Map every way chargebacks, returns, or merchant failures could cost Tabs money. Set detection triggers and remediation paths before merchants go live.
- Reserve strategy: Define reserve amounts by merchant tier, negative balance triggers, and clawback mechanics. Own thresholds and escalation paths.
- Reconciliation: Know where every dollar sits across balance accounts and settlement daily. Build cadence, alerting thresholds, and break-investigation processes.
- Fraud and compliance: Own AML policy, merchant acceptance policy, and risk relationships with payment partners.
- Disputes and chargebacks: Build merchant self-service systems for evidence flow, deadlines, and escalation. Own outcomes, not queues.
- Scaling: Ensure underwriting, merchant sign-up, and acquirer migration scale as the company grows from dozens to hundreds of merchants.
You're a systems and strategy builder who thinks ahead about failure modes. You've made high-stakes calls on reserves or fraud exceptions where being wrong cost real money. You're cross-functional, comfortable reading both legal documents and webhook payloads. You thrive in early-stage environments, are metrics-driven, and bring high ownership and bias toward action.
Required: 5+ years in payments operations, risk, or fraud/dispute operations, including 2+ years at a payment facilitator, processor, or platform (Stripe Connect, Adyen, Square, Shopify Payments, etc.). Track record of building processes, not just operating them. Fluency in reserves, holdbacks, and offset mechanics. Working knowledge of ACH returns and card chargebacks.
Pluses: merchant-facing dispute self-service experience, acquirer migration experience, B2B billing/invoicing platform familiarity, treasury or banking-partner relationship management exposure.
