Cloudflare's Managed Defense Center (part of Cloudforce One's INTERDICT organization) is seeking a Response Engineer to provide premium-level security support for enterprise customers. Operating 24/7/365, the team identifies, analyzes, disrupts, and responds to cyber threats ranging from cybercriminal activity to nation-state-sponsored APTs.
In this role, you will monitor and investigate security alerts to identify attacks targeting customer infrastructure across OSI Layers 3, 4, and 7. You'll analyze threats using Cloudflare's suite of security products including Magic Transit, DDoS mitigation, Network Firewall, WAF, Spectrum, Bot Management, and Rate Limiting. Responsibilities include making detailed mitigation recommendations, implementing mitigation strategies on behalf of customers, and generating custom attack reporting beyond self-service dashboards.
You'll collaborate closely with Engineering and Operations teams to respond to incidents, work with Product teams to improve tools and detection capabilities, and maintain extensive customer communication via chat, email, and phone. Key activities include reviewing alert relevancy and urgency, creating incident tracking tickets, configuring security monitoring rules, and analyzing traffic signatures (IP addresses, cookies, HTTP headers, JavaScript footprints) to distinguish legitimate from malicious traffic.
Required skills: strong OSI model and TCP/UDP/BGP/QUIC knowledge, advanced iptables proficiency, attack anomaly detection and mitigation rule creation, minimum 2 years technical and customer support experience, command-line/Bash competency, Linux/Mac/Windows sysadmin skills, and programming experience (Python, Ruby, PHP, C, C#, Java, Perl, Git). Security certifications (CISSP, GCIA, GCIH, GCFA, GCFE) are preferred. Note: This role requires weekend and holiday rotation with a Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday 5-day schedule, with core hours 9–5 Pacific time.
