Halter is a climate-tech company revolutionizing sustainable grazing through solar-powered smart collars, satellite connectivity, mesh networks, and machine learning. The company enables farmers and graziers to optimize pasture management and animal welfare without traditional fencing, quad bikes, or herding dogs. Backed by tier-1 investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and DCVC, Halter is scaling rapidly with plans to add 500 roles in the next year. As Patent Attorney, you will be the second member of Halter's IP team, responsible for identifying, protecting, and prosecuting patents across the company's novel hardware, firmware, software, machine learning, and mechanical innovations. You'll work directly with engineering teams to understand complex technologies—reading design documents and code—and translate inventions into defensible patent claims before they're formally documented. Key responsibilities include: partnering with engineers to identify patentable, commercially valuable inventions and drafting specifications and claims across multiple technical domains; managing patent prosecution end-to-end, including examination responses, amendments, and strategy with external counsel support; leading freedom-to-operate clearances; developing AI-enhanced tools to scale the IP function; and contributing to broader company initiatives. You'll bring 5–10 years of patent attorney or patent engineer experience, with strong technical expertise or serious interest in software, electronics, or machine learning. You should excel at patentability assessments, drafting, prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and invalidity work. A genuine curiosity about how things work, self-direction, and a drive to automate manual processes are essential. Agricultural technology background, legal/litigation experience, and willingness to contribute beyond IP are bonuses. Halter offers competitive remuneration including salary, benefits, and an employee stock ownership plan. Additional perks include 6 months fully paid primary caregiver parental leave, 4 weeks secondary caregiver leave, $1,000 annual self-development budget, wellness leave, and unlimited paid annual leave. The company operates an office-first culture in Auckland, emphasizing in-person collaboration and relationship-building.
