Base is rebuilding the electrical grid through distributed battery networks and modular datacenters. As Network Engineer for Distributed Compute, you will own end-to-end network architecture for a fleet of hundreds of small compute sites spread across utility territories.
You will design and standardize the per-site network stack (routing, switching, firewall, out-of-band management) to enable rapid site onboarding. You'll lead fiber and carrier strategy across the fleet, evaluating dark fiber vs. lit services and build vs. lease decisions for each site cluster. You'll select network topologies that scale with site density and manage carrier/ISP selection, circuit ordering, and failover across fiber, fixed wireless, and cellular.
You will build and operate the fleet overlay network and its automation, establishing secure site-to-site and site-to-cloud connectivity with BGP routing and traffic engineering optimized for inference workloads. You'll automate configuration generation, zero-touch provisioning, and monitoring so network state is managed in code.
You will instrument and secure the network in practice, tracking latency, throughput, packet loss, and circuit health in Base's telemetry and Grafana stack. You'll define segmentation between compute, battery control, and management planes, implement certificate management and audit-ready access controls, and support initial site installations and bring-ups in the field. As processes mature, you'll reduce on-site involvement and scale operations.
This is the first dedicated network engineering hire on the Distributed Compute program, so architecture decisions remain open and you'll shape the technical direction. Production inference traffic will run on your network within months.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years running production networks
- Deep, hands-on routing and switching: BGP, OSPF, VLANs, VRFs
- Experience with site-to-site connectivity at scale: SD-WAN or overlay networks (WireGuard, IPsec) across tens to hundreds of locations
- Familiarity with fiber networks and topologies
- Experience procuring and managing circuits with carriers
- Comfort working in the field at utility sites
