Transfyr is building physical AI systems for scientific research, capturing real-world experimental work and converting it into machine-readable records. The company has raised a $25M seed round and is backed by advisors including Chris Ré (Stanford), David Baker (Nobel laureate), and Kevin Weil (former CPO at OpenAI).
As a Field Applications Engineer, you will be the bridge between Transfyr's AI platform and real-world laboratory environments. This role focuses on the physical and hardware aspects of deployment (distinct from a parallel Forward Deployed Engineer role focused on software customization).
Key responsibilities include:
**Hardware & Deployment**: Lead sourcing and assembly of multi-sensor arrays, networking infrastructure, and edge compute kits. Design and execute rigorous stress tests on hardware configurations before field deployment. Own end-to-end installation and setup at customer sites, overcoming site-specific infrastructure challenges.
**Customer Collaboration**: Partner with customer scientists to understand experimental workflows and design bespoke sensor placements. Translate field observations and customer feedback into structured requirements for internal Hardware, Software, Perception, and AI/ML teams.
**Technical Problem-Solving**: Triage and resolve first-line hardware/software issues in the field. Proactively identify quick-win opportunities by analyzing platform data to surface actionable insights on scientific workflows. This role can grow to include customer-specific edge inference infrastructure.

The role is based in Cambridge, MA with significant travel nationwide (up to 30%). You should have experience managing physical hardware and networking installations in complex environments.
