Salary: USD 175,000 - 240,000 / annual
Edison Scientific builds AI scientist agents to accelerate scientific discovery and drug development. The company combines cutting-edge AI with domain expertise from leading researchers in biology, physics, chemistry, and machine learning.
As a Cloud Software Engineer, you will design, build, and operate the infrastructure that enables Edison's autonomous scientific discovery platform to deploy within enterprise clients' own cloud environments. Many of the company's largest enterprise partners have strict compliance and security requirements that mandate on-premises or private cloud deployment. Your role is to solve the complex technical challenges of "bring your own cloud" (BYOC) engagements, allowing clients to leverage Edison's platform while maintaining data sovereignty.
You will have significant architectural ownership and will work alongside a small team of experienced engineers. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build systems that make the platform deployable across AWS and GCP within client infrastructure
- Develop operators, infrastructure tooling, and automation to streamline BYOC deployments
- Support enterprise client deployments and onboarding, working directly with their engineering and security teams
- Partner with the forward-deployed engineering team to scope requirements and deliver on active engagements
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks in the BYOC process to improve operations and capacity
- Contribute to technical decision-making and architecture for the BYOC product
- Harden security, reliability, and observability of deployments in environments outside your direct control
The role is based in Edison's San Francisco office in the Dogpatch neighborhood, a converted warehouse with open space and a team deeply committed to the mission.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of experience building and operating backend or infrastructure systems in production
- Proficiency in Python for backend development and infrastructure tooling
- Deep familiarity with cloud products (AWS/GCP), security, and deployment operations
- Strong understanding of application network architecture including VPCs, DNS, secrets, proxies, etc.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Pulumi, or Crossplane) and GitOps workflows
- Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with enterprise clients
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Kubernetes, multi-tenant architectures, or deploying software into customer-controlled environments
- Experience with AI applications or scientific computing solutions
- Prior experience in startups or small teams with significant architectural ownership and ambiguity
- Experience scaling systems or platforms through periods of rapid growth
