OpenAI is seeking an experienced communications professional to lead media relations and safety communications efforts. This role is central to OpenAI's mission of ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity, with a focus on communicating how the company builds and deploys technology responsibly.
You will develop and execute communications strategies that highlight OpenAI's proactive real-world safety practices and reinforce public confidence in responsible AI development. Key responsibilities include crafting thoughtful, timely responses to emerging questions or issues; preparing materials such as statements, FAQs, and backgrounders that translate complex technical information into clear, credible narratives; and partnering closely with cross-functional teams to anticipate emerging topics and build readiness plans.
You will build and strengthen relationships with journalists covering AI safety, technology, and policy, while providing trusted counsel to leaders and teammates on sensitive or fast-moving narratives. You'll help establish clear processes for monitoring external narratives and responding with empathy, accuracy, and care.
This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, requiring 3 days per week in the office. OpenAI offers relocation support.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of professional PR and media relations experience
- Corporate and/or crisis communications experience preferred; in-house experience is a plus
- Experience with AI technologies or strong personal interest in AI
- Exceptional ability to translate complex technical information into clear, persuasive external-facing content
- Proven success building relationships and collaborating with press, executives, partners, and other stakeholders
- Clear thinking, good judgment, and calm focus in high-profile projects
- Value precision and accountability while thinking creatively about framing and narrative
