QuantumDiamonds is a deep-tech company founded in 2022 as a spin-off of TU Munich, building commercial quantum sensing tools for semiconductor inspection and failure analysis. The company leverages quantum sensors to capture three-dimensional current maps within multi-layer chips, working with major semiconductor manufacturers on chip debugging and yield analysis. As a Mechanical Engineer in the Hardware Pre-Development Team, you will take hands-on ownership of the mechanical and optomechanical concepts behind lab demonstrators of the Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM). You will translate optical, RF, and magnetic requirements into elegant, pragmatic mechanical designs and ensure all technologies fit together in working demonstrators. Key responsibilities include: - Develop optomechanical concepts for lab demonstrators by gathering requirements from physicists and engineers and translating them into designs that maintain stability, accessibility, and ease of modification - Drive rapid prototyping by selecting appropriate manufacturing processes (3D printing, laser cutting, machining, off-the-shelf components), using in-house equipment and external suppliers to iterate designs quickly - Integrate full setups, ensuring optics, lasers, microwave delivery, magnetics, electronics, and sensors work together physically and functionally - Design for physics compatibility, selecting materials and geometries that meet optical, RF, and magnetic requirements while managing stiffness, thermal drift, and tolerance budgets - Create CAD models, drawings, and bills of materials in SolidWorks with clear documentation for reproducibility and manufacturing - Serve as the mechanical interface to the Product Development Team, learning from experienced mechanical engineers and handing over validated designs as technologies mature You will work in a multidisciplinary environment with physicists, engineers, and data scientists. The role emphasizes speed and rapid iteration—turning new ideas into testable hardware in days rather than months. You will have ownership of your designs from day one and see direct impact on the company's quantum sensing products. The company is backed by top-tier deep tech investors and semiconductor experts, with over 70 employees internationally. Working language is English. REQUIREMENTS: - Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Physics, or related field, or comparable technical qualification with hands-on design experience - Solid working knowledge of SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD tool with ability to turn ideas into manufacturable designs - Practical knowledge of rapid prototyping technologies (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC basics) and understanding of accuracy, stiffness, and material properties for each process - Hands-on mentality: enjoy building, measuring, adjusting, and rebuilding your own designs - Strong spatial reasoning and systems thinking to anticipate conflicts, drift, and alignment issues - Curious, exploratory mindset comfortable with uncertainty and preferring prototype testing over paper debates - Good communication and documentation skills for fast-paced multidisciplinary teams NICE TO HAVE: - First experience with precision engineering, tolerance budgets, or optomechanical design - Understanding of material properties and compatibility with optical, RF, and magnetic environments - Physics-oriented background or strong interest in quantum sensing measurement principles - Experience with FEA (ANSYS), machining, or external manufacturing partnerships
