Hullbot is building autonomous underwater robots to inspect and clean ship hulls, reducing biofouling, fuel consumption, and emissions in the global maritime industry. The company operates systems worldwide and is focused on scaling production while maintaining hardware reliability in one of the planet's most challenging environments.
You will join the New Product Introduction (NPI) team, responsible for transitioning designs from prototype to volume production. Your core focus is making mechatronic subsystems robust, repeatable, and manufacturable at scale. You'll own design-for-manufacture and reliability on assigned modules, working closely with R&D to shape designs for production early rather than inheriting locked-in decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Rework parts and assemblies for producibility, ease of build, and consistent quality
- Analyze fleet reliability data and returned hardware to identify root causes of field failures, implement design changes, update tooling and documentation, and roll out improvements to production
- Analyze critical interfaces, seals, and fits to ensure assemblies function correctly from first assembly
- Define and validate controlled-environment processes (potting, sealing, bonding) including materials, dispense paths, cure schedules, and acceptance criteria
- Collaborate with external suppliers and machine shops on design-for-manufacture reviews, quoting, and first-article inspection
- Develop and maintain work instructions, process documentation, and quality checkpoints
- Drive continuous improvement in reliability, cycle time, cost, consistency, and first-pass yield as volumes scale
You'll work in an advanced manufacturing facility in Marrickville with a collaborative, fast-moving culture where your work has immediate, visible impact. Flexible work arrangements are available.
Requirements:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Strong 3D CAD skills (Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, NX, or similar) with focus on clean, scalable document structures
- 3+ years in mechanical design, manufacturing, or NPI, including hands-on involvement taking products from prototype through repeatable production
- Experience designing and optimizing parts for large-quantity production
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, tolerances, and materials, and how design choices affect manufacturability
- Confident with tolerance stack-ups and supplier-ready drawings
- Analytical and data-focused approach to using test, production, and field failure data for root-cause analysis
- Experience designing jigs, fixtures, and production tooling
- Experience with manual and automated production processes (injection molding, CNC machining, vacuum casting/forming, potting/encapsulation)
- Flexible, collaborative approach with clear ownership and cross-team communication
- Hands-on comfort in workshop, production line, and iterative problem-solving
- Day-to-day experience with MRP/ERP systems for parts management, BOMs, and supplier communication
Bonus experience: underwater/harsh-environment systems, ingress protection, corrosion resistance, sealing/pressure-housing design (O-rings, glands, penetrators), robotics or electromechanical product manufacturing.
