Divergent 3D is building advanced manufacturing systems for automotive, aerospace, and defense industries. As a Mechanical Engineer II on the Factory Automation team, you will design and develop mechanical components and subsystems for Divergent's Adaptive Production System (DAPS)—a platform enabling factories to rapidly reconfigure for simultaneous production across multiple industries while eliminating traditional tooling bottlenecks.
In this hands-on role, you will own mechanical design efforts from concept through detailed design, build, testing, and integration. You'll translate system requirements into practical mechanical designs, evaluate tradeoffs across performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule, and collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, operations) to develop and deploy automation hardware.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning mechanical design and development of defined automation components and subsystems across the full lifecycle
- Translating system requirements into clear mechanical component requirements, interfaces, constraints, and acceptance criteria
- Developing practical solutions to challenging factory automation problems while balancing technical requirements with cost, schedule, manufacturability, and reliability constraints
- Creating mechanical designs using CAD, drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, engineering calculations, component selection, and bills of material
- Applying mechanical engineering fundamentals across structures, mechanisms, precision motion systems, fluids, thermal systems, sealing, enclosures, and machine integration
- Evaluating design alternatives and making sound engineering tradeoffs, seeking guidance when appropriate
You should have experience designing, building, and testing mechanical systems with a strong foundation in machine design, manufacturing methods, mechanisms, motion systems, and structures. This is an opportunity to work on bleeding-edge industrial automation systems with few existing precedents, combining advanced automation, software, and factory data to enable flexible, sustainable manufacturing.
