Wealthsimple, Canada's leading financial innovator serving 4+ million Canadians with $155B+ in assets under administration, is seeking a Manager of Direct Tax to own the company's income tax provision, corporate compliance, and deferred tax functions.
Reporting to the Director of Tax, you will lead the direct tax lane within the Finance team, responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual income tax provisions covering current and deferred tax, effective tax rate reconciliations, provision-to-return true-ups, and tax account reconciliations. You'll set technical standards for direct tax work, defining what requires independent recalculation versus what can be accepted on preparer support, and designing workpapers, registers, and review workflows that embed those standards. You'll leverage AI and automation where appropriate to handle assembly work, freeing your time for judgment-based decisions.
Key responsibilities include analyzing and documenting new, significant, or complex tax positions (deferred tax asset recognition, attributes, loss pools, entity changes, EIFEL restrictions, IFRIC 23 treatments); reviewing T2 and provincial corporate income tax returns across the entity group; maintaining compliance calendars and managing true-ups; investigating discrepancies with tax authorities; ensuring audit-ready workpapers with clear substantiation; producing entity-level tax memos linking treatments to Income Tax Act sections; leading direct tax audit support with the CRA and Revenu Québec; managing special tax elections and waivers; and advising the business on direct tax consequences of transactions and reorganizations.
You bring a CPA designation with deep Canadian corporate income tax expertise, hands-on provision experience under IFRS/IAS 12, judgment on deferred tax asset recognition and tax attributes, multi-entity T2 compliance experience, and a proven track record reviewing others' work with clear technical writing. Nice-to-haves include an In-Depth Tax Program, CRA/provincial audit experience, experience directing external advisors, fintech or regulated multi-entity environment background, and familiarity with Taxprep, NetSuite, or Taxnet Pro.
You take active ownership of direct tax, monitor internal and external changes, review by risk rather than rote, hold technical lines professionally, document positions as you reach them, and are comfortable with evolving data and processes while using AI judiciously.
