OpenAI's Solutions Engineering team is seeking a Manager of Field Security Specialists to build and lead a customer-facing cyber solutions engineering function. This is a hands-on leadership role combining team development with direct engagement on strategic customer opportunities at the intersection of frontier AI and cybersecurity.
You will establish the operating model for the function, define engagement standards, and personally support complex customer opportunities. The team will help security leaders and practitioners apply OpenAI's models, APIs, and agentic workflows to real defensive challenges including application security, secure software development, vulnerability management, threat modeling, cloud and identity security, SOC operations, detection engineering, incident response, and security validation.
Key responsibilities include hiring and coaching a high-performing team of Field Security Specialists; establishing team strategy, operating model, and customer delivery standards; prioritizing specialist capacity across strategic customers and regions; leading discovery with CISOs and security executives to identify high-value AI-enabled security workflows; setting quality bars for demonstrations, workshops, reference architectures, and pilots; ensuring customer engagements include clear success criteria, appropriate data boundaries, and human approval for consequential actions; coaching the team to distinguish credible, evidence-backed outcomes from unvalidated findings; partnering across Sales, Solutions Engineering, Product, Engineering, Research, Security, and Legal; defining qualification and escalation practices; and turning successful engagements into repeatable cyber plays and product feedback.
Ideal candidates have meaningfully led customer-facing technical security or solutions engineering teams; experience hiring and performance-managing highly technical staff; genuine cybersecurity practitioner credibility with ability to reason through threat models, attack paths, and remediation; strong customer and commercial judgment; comfort moving between CISO business priorities and practitioner technical evidence; hands-on technical fluency with code, APIs, CI/CD systems, security tooling, and agent architectures; understanding of AI workflows including retrieval, structured outputs, tool calling, evaluations, and guardrails; and ability to operate effectively in ambiguity while building new teams and processes from the ground up.
