OpenAI is seeking an experienced technical leader to manage the Applied AI Engineering team focused on Codex adoption. This role leads a team of Applied AI Engineers responsible for helping strategic customers transform software development with AI capabilities. You will own the operating model and technical engagement strategy for Codex, guiding customers from initial exploration to scaled adoption. Your responsibilities include leading and mentoring a high-performing team, designing AI-enhanced development workflows and agentic systems, and serving as the senior technical escalation point for complex customer implementations. Key responsibilities: - Lead, hire, and mentor Applied AI Engineers supporting Codex customers across strategic accounts - Own the operating model and technical engagement strategy for Codex adoption - Guide teams in designing and implementing AI-enhanced workflows, agentic systems, and scalable architectures - Act as senior technical advisor and escalation point for complex implementations - Partner with Sales, Product, Research, and Engineering to align customer outcomes with product direction - Establish repeatable technical patterns, playbooks, and reference architectures - Coach engineers to operate as trusted technical partners to customer engineering leaders - Synthesize customer insights and translate them into actionable product feedback - Develop deep understanding of customer usage patterns, friction points, and opportunities for new capabilities - Champion safe and effective adoption of AI-powered development workflows Required qualifications: - 8+ years in deeply technical, customer-facing roles (applied engineering, solutions architecture, deployment engineering, technical consulting) - 2+ years leading technical teams with hiring and mentoring experience - Experience building or deploying generative AI, developer platforms, agentic systems, or cloud-based solutions in production - Strong hands-on software engineering experience with Python or JavaScript - Understanding of modern software development lifecycles and AI/coding agent applications - Ability to work directly with customer engineering teams on ambiguous problems - Effective communication across technical and executive audiences - Comfort in ambiguous, fast-moving environments - Strong ownership, humility, and technical judgment The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week).
