Wordsmith is a legal operating system for in-house legal teams, used by 500+ companies including Financial Times, Canva, and Starling. The company is backed by over $100M from Index Ventures, General Catalyst, and Highland Europe.
You will be the first Legal Engineer building out privacy and compliance as a brand-new product vertical at Wordsmith. This role spans privacy law, compliance frameworks, and regulatory governance—translating complex legal requirements into structured, AI-executable solutions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building privacy and compliance products by converting messy legal and regulatory requirements into workable solutions that AI agents can execute
- Owning the privacy and compliance product vertical with real autonomy over architecture and roadmap
- Supporting pre-sales by sitting with customers, understanding their compliance challenges, and demonstrating or building tailored solutions
- Applying deep knowledge of privacy law, financial services compliance, AI governance, and broader regulatory landscapes to customer problems
- Extending into adjacent legal product areas as needed
- Building solutions using Wordsmith's no-code platform, leveraging AI without requiring traditional coding
You should have deep expertise in privacy law and/or compliance practice (mid-to-senior level), either as a qualified lawyer or specialist with real field depth. Strong AI literacy is essential—you must be comfortable reasoning about AI capabilities and limitations daily, and building with modern AI tools. You need a builder's mindset to structure messy requirements into workable products, client-facing confidence to engage customers directly, and the proactivity to work independently alongside the Head of Privacy.
Desirable experience includes legal tech or RegTech exposure, breadth across compliance landscapes (ISO 27001, SOC 2, EU AI Act), and hands-on building experience with prompt design or workflow automation.
Wordsmith operates as an in-person team based in Edinburgh or London, with office-based work as the default. You'll work closely with Sales, Product, and Engineering, with meaningful ownership over problem scoping and solution building.
