Encord is hiring a Learning & Development Specialist in London to design and deliver training for the distributed workforce of annotators who produce training data for frontier AI labs and physical AI companies. This is a hands-on role combining instructional design with live facilitation.
You will convert technical annotation specifications and guidelines into teachable material that non-specialist adults can absorb and execute correctly within days. The role sits at the intersection of learning science and operational impact: your success is measured by ramp time to competence, first-pass quality rates, and workforce qualification levels.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing modular, sequenced training material built on worked examples, edge-case libraries, and annotated failure cases, delivered within days of project launch
- Applying explicit learning-science principles: managing cognitive load, chunking dense specifications, scaffolding support, and using spaced retrieval practice
- Facilitating live remote training sessions daily during project ramps, adjusting in real time when concepts aren't landing
- Building criterion-referenced assessments that measure readiness and competence, not just recall
- Designing for novice audiences with no assumed prior knowledge, using plain language suitable for second-language learners
- Building durable curricula for repeated domains (medical imaging, document AI, LLM evaluation, robot teleoperation, egocentric capture)
- Coaching Human Data Program Managers to improve their teaching effectiveness
- Observing annotators in their first hours on new tasks and iterating design based on where they get stuck
- Partnering with Product on embedding guidance into the platform itself
- Measuring all programs against before-and-after operational metrics (quality, throughput) and retiring ineffective ones
You must be grounded in learning theory and able to articulate which principles you're applying (cognitive load, worked-example effect, scaffolding, spaced retrieval, criterion-referenced assessment). You are an excellent live facilitator comfortable teaching distributed cohorts, and you design for the learner in front of you rather than assuming prior knowledge. You're execution-oriented, analytically rigorous, and comfortable being measured on operational outcomes rather than satisfaction scores. You work well from technical specifications and often catch contradictions in guidelines. You're a clear writer and strong cross-functional communicator.
