Scopely is seeking a Lead Systems Designer to join the Star Trek Fleet Command team in Barcelona on a hybrid basis. Star Trek Fleet Command is a top-grossing 4X MMO launched in 2018 that continues to evolve and engage millions of players globally. The company is entering a bold new chapter, reimagining the traditional 4X experience, and needs a design leader to shape the content and progression systems players engage with daily.
In this role, you will own the design standards, direction, and player experiences across monthly content releases. You'll lead the feature pipeline, directing designers and UX specialists to craft compelling gameplay experiences. Your responsibilities include guiding teams through the creative process to meet both vision and player needs, directly contributing to novel gameplay systems focused on resource generation, spending, time gating, and power growth. You'll create systems that foster meaningful player agency and long-term investment while managing and mentoring designers in systems and economy design.
You'll use spreadsheet tools (Excel, Google Sheets) to model economies and progression pacing, collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, analysts, and engineers, and evaluate performance using data, player feedback, and playtesting. The role requires designing for scale with long-term content extensibility and system health in mind.
Required qualifications include 2+ years of game design leadership experience and 8+ years designing systems or economies for live, free-to-play games, preferably in MMO, 4X, or strategy genres. You must have proven F2P systems design and progression modeling expertise, be a confident people manager and mentor, and have experience across all game design disciplines: concept, progression, interface, monetization, and retention. You should excel at translating KPI targets and data into design direction, master spreadsheet balancing of power curves and resource flow, and thrive in cross-functional, live production environments.
Bonus qualifications include deep 4X genre knowledge, familiarity with SQL or scripting tools, passion for Star Trek or strategic social games, and prior experience with alliance or co-op systems in large-scale games.
