Apex manufactures satellite buses (spacecraft platforms) at scale, combining software, vertical integration, and hardware designed for manufacturing. These platforms enable earth observation, communications, and other critical space applications.
As Lead Launch Engineer, you will own complex spacecraft missions and serve as the primary technical liaison between Apex's internal teams and external launch providers. This role balances strategic mission planning with hands-on technical execution, split roughly 50% management and 50% individual contributor work.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and coordinating integration of satellite payloads with various launch vehicles, including propulsion loading and separation system integration
- Working closely with launch providers to define mission requirements, interfaces, and integration schedules
- Developing and maintaining satellite launch plans, procedures, and readiness reviews
- Overseeing satellite transportation, handling, and pre-launch processing at launch sites
- Ensuring compatibility between satellite and launch vehicle across mechanical, electrical, and environmental interfaces
- Supporting environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC) to validate launch readiness
- Conducting system-level checkouts and troubleshooting during pre-launch and countdown operations
- Interfacing with regulatory agencies to secure launch approvals and compliance with international spaceflight standards
- Providing real-time technical support during launch campaigns, including anomaly resolution
- Collaborating with mechanical, avionics, and systems engineers to optimize satellite integration processes
- Mentoring, tasking, and directing the launch engineering team
You will set up companywide launch integration processes to ensure reliable vehicle launches and lead launch campaigns. The ideal candidate solves complex launch integration challenges with a focus on practicality and scalability, works well across teams, and thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced aerospace environment.
Requirements:
- U.S. Person status (required for access to export-controlled data)
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Minimum 7 years of experience in spacecraft/launch vehicle integration, mission integration, or launch operations
- Experience working with launch vehicle providers
- Previous launch campaign ownership
- Hands-on experience with satellite testing, integration, and environmental qualification
- Proven track record of managing complex projects with multiple interdependent tasks
Preferred qualifications:
- Leadership experience in satellite manufacturing or related aerospace/defense/high-tech industries
- Experience mentoring or directing an engineering team
- Familiarity with AFSPCMAN 91-710 submittal processes
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and office productivity tools
