SoFi is seeking an Independent Risk Management Director to lead second-line risk oversight of the Invest business, a critical growth area for the fintech company. This senior role reports to enterprise risk leadership and serves as the primary risk partner to Invest business leadership, providing credible challenge, strategic advisory, and comprehensive oversight across operational, fraud, technology, credit, third-party, product, and model risks—excluding compliance, which is handled by a dedicated team.
Key responsibilities include: maintaining an enterprise-wide view of the Invest business's risk profile and control effectiveness; advising senior business leaders on risk implications of strategic decisions, product expansion, and operational changes; representing Independent Risk Management in executive forums and board-level governance discussions; overseeing aggregate portfolio risk trends across multiple risk categories; identifying thematic and emerging risks with root-cause analysis and corrective action planning; collaborating with business units, Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, and AML teams to optimize risk appetite and tolerance; supporting post-launch reviews and continuous control enhancements; and benchmarking risk practices against peer institutions.
The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of experience in risk management, operational risk, enterprise risk, product risk, audit, compliance, or related control functions, with demonstrated expertise supporting brokerage, investment advisory, and wealth management operations. Deep subject matter expertise in broker-dealer and investment advisory matters, investment product risks, and comprehensive understanding of risk management controls across operational, fraud, technology, credit, and third-party domains is essential. The role requires comfort challenging business assumptions and escalation decisions, strong communication skills for presenting to senior management and board committees, and the ability to leverage industry benchmarking and lessons learned to strengthen governance and controls.
