BetterUp is seeking an HR Operations & AI Enablement Manager to lead and transform how HR Operations functions at the company. This is a high-impact role managing a team of 3–5 people, responsible for the operational backbone of HR—processes, systems partnerships, and compliance work that ensure reliable, fast, and consistent employee interactions.
You will own two interconnected mandates: (1) AI & Automation Enablement—bringing an AI-first lens to HR Ops by identifying manual, repetitive, or error-prone work and either fixing it directly with lightweight tools or scoping it for engineering partners. You'll redesign end-to-end workflows (onboarding, offboarding, etc.) with automation embedded where it creates real leverage, pilot emerging AI tools, define and report impact (hours saved, cycle time reduced, errors prevented), and coach the team to adopt AI tools responsibly. (2) HR Operations & Continuous Improvement—leading and continuously improving end-to-end HR processes with clear SLAs and consistent execution, solving problems at root cause across the People function, owning HR case management and employee support as an escalation point, ensuring policies are documented and compliant, and administering benefits operations.
You will also serve as the connective tissue between HR Ops, Legal, Payroll, IT, Recruiting, Total Rewards, and Workday/AI Automation engineers. You'll represent HR Ops' needs in the Workday and People Technology roadmap, own HR data integrity and reporting accuracy, help build HR analytics capability, ensure compliance with employment laws and data privacy regulations across multiple jurisdictions, manage and develop your team, and own vendor relationships for HR Ops tools and services.
Success means measurably reducing manual work through automation and AI, running HR Ops processes against clear SLAs with consistent execution, solving recurring problems at root cause, building a well-managed and capable HR Ops team, maintaining compliance and audit readiness proactively, ensuring HR Ops requirements are well represented in technology roadmaps, establishing early HR analytics capability, and positioning HR Ops as a credible, reliable partner across the company.
BetterUp is a hybrid company with a focus on in-person collaboration when necessary. Employees are expected to be available to work from one of the office hubs (Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; or Washington, DC metro) at least two days per week, or eight days per month.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications (must-have):
- 6+ years of experience in HR operations, HRIS, or related HR leadership, including proven experience scaling HR processes, systems, and compliance in a fast-growing company
- Hands-on experience using AI and automation to improve HR operations (e.g., automating workflows, improving reporting, enhancing employee experience), with specific examples of measured impact and ability to coach a team to adopt these tools
- Experience administering or managing benefits, with working understanding of compliance requirements
- Direct experience with Workday and connecting it to other systems (e.g., Pave, Ashby, HC 365, Athena); understanding how tools fit together even if you don't configure them yourself
- Track record of running HR operations work end-to-end: solving ambiguous, cross-functional problems at root rather than escalating them away
- Experience managing a team and building high-performance culture, including coaching team members at different stages of development, ideally a team still developing its skills and needing active coaching
- Experience with global HR operations and compliance across multiple jurisdictions
- Data-driven mindset with experience in HR reporting, analytics, and defining/tracking success metrics
Desired Qualifications (nice-to-have):
- Experience leading systems integration or new-system rollouts
- Experience designing shared-services thinking (defining what HR information should be self-service vs. accessible to which parts of the business)
- Comfort partnering with engineers to translate HR Ops needs into system requirements
- Experience piloting or leading AI tooling adoption for HR or operations teams (e.g., AI-assisted case triage, employee Q&A bots)
- Builder mentality: shipping small, instrumenting what you build, iterating based on real usage
- Experience in larger or more mature HR organizations with track record of helping a function scale and operationalize
- Background in tech or high-growth startups
- HR certifications (e.g., SPHR, SHRM-SCP)
