Coram AI is seeking an experienced HR Director and Business Partner to own and scale HR operations as the company grows across the U.S., UK, and India. This is a hands-on, broad HR leadership role requiring expertise across the full employee lifecycle, not specialized in a single area. You will inherit existing HR operations and programs, quickly assess what's in place, and take ownership of refining and scaling them. Key responsibilities include: - Own day-to-day HR operations, building scalable processes without unnecessary bureaucracy - Manage and develop a small HR team of 2–3 people, potentially distributed across multiple countries and time zones - Oversee payroll, benefits, employee administration, onboarding, offboarding, and core HR operations - Own and refine performance management, including performance cycles, feedback, manager enablement, and performance improvement plans - Partner with leadership on compensation, promotions, leveling, and organizational changes - Advise managers on complex employee relations issues and lead internal investigations - Own HR compliance across all operating jurisdictions, monitoring federal, state, and local requirements - Maintain and update employee handbooks, HR policies, and SOPs across all states and countries - Oversee HR compliance audits and reporting (payroll, I-9s, benefits, workplace safety, EEO-1, OSHA, ACA) - Partner with Finance, Recruiting, and leadership on headcount planning and people initiatives - Evaluate and optimize the HR technology stack, leveraging automation and AI-enabled tools - Use HR data and employee feedback to identify trends and inform leadership decisions - Remain hands-on and willing to dive into details as needed The role is based in Sunnyvale, California, five days per week. Occasional flexibility across time zones (UK and India) will be required. Coram AI is a VC-backed startup with $65M in funding, already generating revenue with significant runway. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of progressive HR experience with broad exposure across multiple HR functions - Experience in a growing organization of 200–500 employees with responsibility across multiple HR facets - Experience managing and developing a team of 2–3+ people - Strong experience across HR operations, employee relations, performance management, compensation, payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee lifecycle management - Experience owning or significantly contributing to performance management and compensation review processes - Experience supporting employees and managers across multiple locations and time zones - Proven experience managing employment compliance across multiple states, with specific familiarity in complex regulatory environments (California, New York, Illinois) - Experience using modern HR technology (HRIS, payroll, benefits, performance management systems) - Comfortable leveraging automation, integrations, AI, and emerging technologies to streamline HR workflows - Strong judgment and ability to independently navigate complex employee and organizational situations - Experience partnering directly with executives and senior leaders - Comfortable operating in a fast-paced startup environment with evolving priorities - Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder-management skills - Ability to work five days per week in Sunnyvale office - Flexibility to occasionally work outside traditional hours to support UK and India teams HIGHLY PREFERRED: - Active HR certification with compliance focus (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR, or SHRM Specialty Certificate in Employment Law) - Experience in high-growth technology or startup environments - Experience supporting international employee populations - Direct HR experience supporting UK and/or India teams - Experience managing distributed or international HR teams - Experience scaling organizations through 200–500+ employee stage - Experience implementing, migrating, or optimizing HR technology and systems - Experience building or significantly improving performance management, compensation, leveling, or promotion frameworks - Experience using AI and automation to modernize HR operations
