Phylo is an applied research lab building agentic AI systems to accelerate biomedical discovery. Backed by a $13.5M seed round led by a16z, Menlo Ventures, and Anthropic, the company combines world-class researchers and engineers across AI and biology to commercialize the Biomni platform. As Head of Talent, you will be Phylo's first in-house recruiting leader—a player-coach who personally owns full-cycle recruiting while building the recruiting function from the ground up. This is a hands-on role where you will spend significant time sourcing and engaging exceptional candidates rather than managing agencies or administering processes. Key responsibilities include: leading end-to-end recruiting across business, scientific, and engineering roles; developing creative outbound sourcing strategies for senior and specialized positions, building relationships across leading tech companies, research labs, biotech organizations, and academic institutions; establishing Phylo's recruiting operating system including role calibration, structured interview loops, clear rubrics, and interviewer training; protecting hiring bar while closing exceptional people; and scaling the talent function thoughtfully as the company grows. You will work directly with Phylo's founders and hiring managers to build a rigorous, fast, and distinctly human hiring process. Over time, you'll build the systems, employer brand, and team infrastructure needed to support company growth. Required qualifications: at least five years of recruiting experience with a track record of personally sourcing and closing exceptional business, scientific, and engineering talent in high-bar, fast-moving environments. Experience as an early or founding recruiter is especially valuable. You should be a versatile, high-caliber recruiter with demonstrated ability to create recruiting processes, interview systems, tooling, or employer-brand programs from early stage. Excellent judgment and partnership skills are essential—you recognize capability beyond credentials, learn unfamiliar domains quickly, and can calibrate hiring managers without friction. High agency and AI-native approach required; you take ownership from diagnosis through execution and leverage AI, automation, and modern recruiting tools to improve reach, speed, and effectiveness.
