Substack is seeking a Head of Strategic FP&A to build and lead the company's financial planning and analysis function. This is a premier player-coach leadership role reporting to the CFO and CEO, combining hands-on strategic finance work with team building and organizational scaling. Key responsibilities include: hiring and developing a high-performing FP&A team; architecting an AI-native finance organization that leverages automation and modern tools to eliminate manual spreadsheet work; designing and leading Substack's annual budgeting process and rolling quarterly forecasts in partnership with executive leadership; establishing monthly budget vs. actuals cadences and variance analysis across departments; building and maintaining a multi-year three-statement corporate financial model; analyzing platform economics including creator monetization, subscription dynamics, and payment processing margins; and preparing board decks, investor updates, and scenario models for capital raises or strategic transactions. You will work directly with founders and the executive team to shape the business model behind independent media. The role requires deep involvement in strategic questions around pricing, product investment, and long-range financial planning. Ideal candidates bring 5–10 years of experience, ideally starting at a top-tier investment bank (Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs), private equity firm, or management consulting firm (McKinsey, Bain, BCG), followed by high-impact strategic finance or FP&A roles at fast-growing tech companies. You should have a proven track record building and running company-wide budgeting cycles, exceptional financial modeling skills, hands-on data fluency (Snowflake, Looker, Python/R), and an AI-native mindset that prioritizes automation and leverage. Executive presence, ability to translate complex financial analysis into concise recommendations, and demonstrated leadership potential are essential.
