Volta is building vertically integrated AI infrastructure—from capital to clusters to software—with a mission to make compute as reliable and available as electricity. The company launched with a $10B strategic partnership with a leading frontier AI lab, Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, and a $5B AI Infrastructure Fund. With 100+ employees across London, Palo Alto, and New York, Volta is scaling rapidly.
As Head of Project Engineering, you lead the function responsible for delivering large-scale GPU compute infrastructure deployments end-to-end. You own multiple concurrent project teams (each roughly five senior engineers spanning data center operations, network engineering, and systems/platform engineering) from deal discovery through handover to steady-state operations.
Key responsibilities include:
**Deal Discovery & Commitments**: Provide technical input during deal discovery phases—site feasibility, power and cooling envelopes, hardware and fabric options, deployment sequencing, and realistic timelines. Pressure-test commitments before they're signed and contribute technical basis for cost models and capacity assumptions.
**Project Delivery**: Hold accountability for scope, technical quality, and on-time delivery across a portfolio of concurrent deployments. Establish delivery models from facility handover through rack and stack, power-on, fabric build, burn-in, and acceptance. Own escalation and diagnosis when projects go off track (supply, facility, design, or team issues). Allocate scarce senior specialists across projects and manage portfolio risk.
**Handover to Operations**: Define and enforce "done"—acceptance criteria, performance validation, documentation, runbook completeness, monitoring, and operational readiness. Own the controlled transition to steady-state operations and ensure SLA commitments are supportable.
**Organization & People**: Build and lead the project engineering function, hiring senior technical talent willing to travel and work on-site. Run management fundamentals (1:1s, performance conversations, development, succession planning) and establish a career path so project engineering is a destination role.
**Partners & Vendors**: Own technical relationships with OEMs and integration partners through delivery. Work with facility and colocation partners on demarcation and operational boundaries.
**Standards & Repeatability**: Transform deployments from bespoke projects into repeatable processes. Own reference deployment models, standard acceptance test suites, and documentation. Partner with platform and network engineering to automate manual work.
You bring 8+ years in data center, infrastructure, or large-scale technical delivery, with at least 3 years leading multiple teams or through team leads. You have a track record delivering large-scale compute deployments end-to-end where power, cooling, and logistics are real constraints. You possess deep technical depth in at least two of: data center facilities/power/cooling, high-performance network fabric, or compute/systems engineering, with enough credibility to lead senior specialists in other areas. Familiarity with GPU cluster deployment—rack-scale systems, high-density power, liquid cooling, acceptance and validation—is essential.
