Inferact, founded by the creators and core maintainers of vLLM, is building the world's AI inference engine to accelerate AI progress by making inference cheaper and faster. The company sits at the intersection of models and hardware. We are seeking our first in-house Head of Legal to establish and lead Inferact's legal function. This is a hands-on, high-impact role for an experienced technology lawyer who will personally execute on commercial agreements while serving as the primary point person for all legal matters. Key responsibilities include: - Owning key legal matters internally and coordinating complex workstreams with outside counsel - Drafting, negotiating, and closing enterprise customer agreements, cloud and compute vendor contracts, partnerships, and technology licensing deals - Maintaining cross-functional alignment across product, engineering, go-to-market, and operations teams - Managing outside counsel efficiently with clear internal ownership and bias toward execution speed - Navigating frontier legal questions in the open-source LLM inference space - Building lightweight self-service resources, templates, and playbooks to enable teams to move quickly - Translating legal complexity into clear, practical tradeoffs for leadership and engineers Required qualifications: - J.D. or equivalent with active bar admission in good standing - 6+ years of legal experience at a technology company, infrastructure/AI business, or top law firm advising sophisticated tech clients - Demonstrated experience building or scaling a legal function from 0-1, or operating as sole/first lawyer at a fast-growing company - Strong commercial contracting experience with ability to independently draft, negotiate, and close deals - Experience managing outside counsel efficiently - Hands-on execution mindset comfortable with technical complexity in a fast-moving startup - Strong business judgment and ability to communicate legal issues to non-lawyers Preferred experience includes AI inference, model serving, GPU cloud, developer infrastructure, open-source software licensing, AI regulatory issues (data privacy, export controls, emerging AI regulation), negotiations with hyperscalers and enterprise customers, and early-stage startup generalist work (financings, equity, employment, immigration, corporate governance). Location is San Francisco, CA on-site/hybrid, with remote consideration in the US for exceptional candidates. Visa sponsorship available on a case-by-case basis.
