ecoplanet builds the operating system for the energy transition, helping European businesses cut energy costs and manage energy operations efficiently. The company has ~40 people and is backed by EQT Ventures and HV Capital.
You will be the most senior engineering leader at ecoplanet, with no CTO above you. You lead 11 engineers organized in two squads (including two squad leads), own the technical direction of the company, and serve as the engineering voice on the leadership team. This is a hands-on role—you stay close to the code and architecture rather than purely managing.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead and grow the 11-person engineering team: hiring, performance management, development, and retention
- Own all technical systems: the Cockpit SaaS platform, metering and IoT integration layer, data platform (time-series ingestion, quality, pipelines), forecasting and optimization services, and automation for customer assets
- Set technical direction: architecture decisions, build-vs-buy choices, and major platform strategy
- Drive quarterly roadmap execution in partnership with Product
- Manage operations: reliability, on-call rotations, incident response, security posture, and cloud spend
- Build a lean, efficient team culture with minimal process overhead
- Work cross-functionally with Product, Data Science, energy market experts, and other disciplines
You will be expected to maximize the value of your current team before hiring, surface dependencies early, clear blockers, make trade-off calls with Product and founders, and demonstrate that engineering cares about business outcomes. You should set architecture that scales with data volume, customer count, and team growth, and run a proper incident management program with fast response and honest postmortems.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years leading engineering teams in product companies, including senior engineers or squad leads
- Proven experience in lean, hands-on environments without a management layer to delegate to
- Personal ownership of delivery predictability and reliability for production systems that real customers depend on
- Strong technical judgment in at least two of: cloud and distributed backend / multi-tenant SaaS; high-volume or time-series data pipelines; IoT, device integration and real-time telemetry; ML or optimization in production
- Hands-on hiring and performance management experience, including growing people and managing exits when necessary
- Ownership mindset for incident management, security, and compliance
- Clear written and spoken English; German is a strong plus
NICE TO HAVE:
- Background in energy, industrial, SaaS, or physical-world domains
- Prior experience as the most senior technical person (CTO, VP Engineering, or equivalent)
NOT REQUIRED:
- Being the strongest coder on the team (you need to read code, make architecture calls, and occasionally build)
- Prior "Head of" title (the company evaluates what you have done, not the title)
