OpenAI is seeking a Hardware Finance Manager to own an assigned area of hardware COGS and inventory end to end, following the company's acquisition of io and entry into consumer hardware. This individual-contributor role requires deep expertise across multiple hardware finance domains and operates with broad scope across product cost, manufacturing, logistics, inventory, returns, and warranty.
Key responsibilities include owning forecasting, close, and business variance analysis for assigned scope; providing hardware leadership with clear variance explanations and forward-looking signals that connect business and supplier decisions to inventory, cash, COGS, and margin; and partnering with business teams and Finance Platforms to establish financial data systems and dashboards. The role requires ensuring data integrity through clear definitions, ownership, validation checks, and controls; improving forecasting, reporting, and finance processes to scale with organizational growth; and building strong cross-functional relationships to identify material risks and opportunities early.
You will develop practical scenarios and recommendations to help leadership make informed decisions, partner across Supply Chain, Operations, Product, Accounting, Systems/Data, and Finance, and drive alignment without formal authority while communicating complex financial issues clearly to senior stakeholders. As business priorities evolve, you will develop expertise in adjacent COGS or inventory domains.
Ideal candidates bring 8+ years of consumer hardware or complex physical-product finance experience, with deep hands-on expertise across multiple relevant domains and demonstrated ownership in at least two. Strong financial modeling, analytical, communication, and stakeholder-influence skills are essential, along with evidence of building scalable processes, systems, frameworks, or automated workflows. You should identify accounting, control, data, and source implications and engage appropriate owners, with demonstrated ability to lead through influence and improve others' effectiveness.
