Rare Candy is a fast-growing mobile app that brings trading-card collecting into the digital age. The platform features an AI-powered card scanner, digital pack opening (Instapacks), and collection management tools for Pokémon, MTG, Lorcana, One Piece, and other TCGs. The company has achieved 10x revenue growth over the last six months, is profitable, and is now scaling from a 10-person product team. You will join as a Go Backend Developer reporting to the CTO. This is a hands-on product engineering role focused on building the services and APIs that power the core collector experience—from collection management and marketplace transactions to pack opening mechanics. Key responsibilities include: - Building and improving backend services in Go across the collector-facing product - Developing and maintaining GraphQL APIs in collaboration with mobile and frontend engineers - Designing and evolving relational data models, writing efficient SQL, and managing safe database changes - Implementing business logic, background jobs, and third-party integrations for collections, marketplace activity, and Instapacks - Writing automated tests, investigating production bugs, and improving reliability and performance - Working closely with product, design, and engineering to ship features - Taking ownership of well-scoped features from design through production deployment Success milestones: Within 30 days, you'll have the backend running locally and ship your first meaningful fixes or features. By day 90, you'll be regularly shipping backend work with CTO support. By year one, you'll be a reliable contributor across important product areas with ownership over increasingly critical features. The team values fast iteration, clear communication, and engineers who understand the collector community. You'll work in a high-trust, low-ego environment where your work directly impacts passionate users. REQUIREMENTS: - 5–7 years of backend development experience with shipped production features or serious side projects - Proficiency in Go, including error handling, interfaces, concurrency basics, and testing - Experience building or maintaining APIs (GraphQL experience is a plus; REST background is acceptable) - Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL, including schema design, joins, indexes, and transactions - Comfort with debugging tools, logs, and tracing problems through APIs, services, and databases - Ability to thrive in a fast-moving startup where priorities shift and you must figure things out and improve iteratively - Familiarity with trading-card or collector communities (collecting, playing, pack opening, market knowledge, or similar collectible fluency) - Strong focus on correctness, reliability, and maintainable code; ability to think through failure modes and edge cases
