Lightning AI is seeking a Global Tax Lead to build and scale the company's corporate tax compliance function. You will own income tax compliance, tax accounting, forecasting, risk mitigation, and process improvements across a multi-entity consolidated group operating globally with offices in NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, and London.
Key responsibilities include:
**Build and Own the Tax Function**: Stand up Lightning AI's corporate tax function from the ground up, establishing tax policies, documentation, controls, and procedures to support internal governance and audit readiness. Develop a multi-year tax operating roadmap including process design, automation priorities, and a consultant-to-FTE transition plan.
**Federal, State, and Local Compliance**: Lead U.S. federal and state corporate income tax compliance, including the first consolidated federal return. Manage California mandatory combined reporting and multi-state nexus exposure. Oversee indirect tax compliance (sales and use, gross receipts) given the company's multi-jurisdictional data center and customer footprint. Handle property tax compliance across data centers and equipment, including assessment review, return preparation, and appeals.
**International Tax**: Manage international tax compliance and planning for the company's global operations, including transfer pricing documentation and entity structure optimization.
**Tax Planning and Risk Management**: Develop tax strategies to optimize the company's tax position while managing compliance risk. Provide tax guidance on M&A, financing, and operational decisions. Maintain relationships with external tax advisors and coordinate audit defense.
**Cross-functional Partnership**: Work closely with Finance, Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and external advisors to ensure accurate filings, strong controls, and scalable tax operations.
This is a high-impact role combining deep technical tax expertise with operational mindset. You'll build systems and processes to support a fast-growing AI infrastructure company in a complex, evolving tax environment. The role offers high leadership visibility and directly supports financial accuracy, compliance, risk management, and business scalability.
The role is hybrid based in San Francisco with 2 days per week in-office requirements.
