Duolingo is seeking a seasoned General Manager to lead its India business, one of the company's most important growth markets. You will own Duolingo's strategic trajectory in India, build the on-ground team, and serve as the bridge between India's market realities and global leadership.
In this role, you will be responsible for India's strategy and priorities, accountable for user growth and monetization—Duolingo's core metrics. You'll build and lead a cross-functional India-based team, establishing the culture and operating cadence that holds it together. Working in a matrix structure, team members report into their functions while you lead them as one cohesive unit focused on India's success.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting India's strategy and priorities, with accountability for results
- Building and leading an India-based cross-functional team and establishing its culture
- Serving as India's voice: bridging market realities with global leadership's understanding, and translating company priorities into locally relevant work
- Working closely with product teams to shape India-specific product and course improvements
- Influencing and aligning global cross-functional teams to support India's needs
You will report to the Asia Business Lead and work from the Bangalore office. The company welcomes both candidates already in India and those willing to relocate.
Requirements:
- 15+ years of experience in product, growth, or market leadership roles at global, high-growth technology companies
- Track record across both the US and India; credible with leadership abroad and effective on the ground
- Excellent product sense, particularly for how global products are adapted for markets like India
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence without authority; understanding of how different stakeholders think
- Experience working effectively with colleagues across different time zones and locations
- Bias toward acting on what you see rather than waiting for someone else to prioritize it
- Analytical and strategic mindset, but also scrappy and willing to roll up your sleeves
- Passion for language education, building Duolingo's business in India, and appetite for a multi-year commitment
Exceptional candidates will have:
- Built a country team from near zero, including its culture and credibility inside the company
- Adapted an international product for users in developing markets, especially India
- Fluency in one or more Indian languages beyond English
