OpenAI's Intelligence & Investigations Engineering team is seeking a Fullstack Software Engineer to build data-intensive, AI-powered applications and infrastructure for child safety. You will work on systems that detect, analyze, and disrupt abuse across OpenAI's products, partnering closely with the Child Safety team and cross-functional groups.
In this role, you will prototype, build, and maintain intelligence systems that detect, triage, and enable efficient human review of possible high-severity harm. You'll work hand-in-hand with operators and investigators, designing and delivering systems that enable them to work faster, more accurately, and more safely. You'll develop across the full stack—UIs, services, pipelines, and infrastructure—to solve complex safety problems. You'll interact with partners across Product Policy, Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research, contribute to the team's technical strategy for child safety tools, and report impact in a data-driven fashion.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is available. Note that this role involves exposure to sensitive and egregious content.
You should have a strong software engineering foundation and enjoy owning systems end-to-end. You'll be energized by working at the frontier of AI capabilities, integrating new models and APIs into practical systems. Experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines or search/retrieval systems is valuable. You should be pragmatic, able to ship in low-support environments, and comfortable navigating ambiguity and open-ended problem spaces. Prior experience working on engineering for high-severity harms and intuition for the workflows of operations and investigative teams are highly desirable. Bonus: prior knowledge of child-safety-specific challenges such as secure handling of quarantined content and reporting to NCMEC.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript
- Familiarity with tools such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, data warehouses, and SQL
- Strong software engineering foundation with end-to-end system ownership
- Experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines or search/retrieval systems
- Product-minded approach with ability to design for user workflows and iterate quickly
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and evolving goals
- Prior experience working on engineering for high-severity harms (preferred)
- Knowledge of child-safety-specific challenges (bonus)
