General Legal is a YC-backed, AI-native law firm that combines in-house software with attorney expertise to deliver legal services faster, better, and more affordably. The company has grown to ~1,000 clients, millions in annualized revenue, and 20 attorneys within eight months of launch, backed by a $15M seed round. Two co-founders previously exited a company for $650M in 2023.
You will be the company's first product manager, working closely with the CPO, CTO, product operations manager, and engineering team. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with substantial ownership and clear room to grow as the company scales.
Key responsibilities:
- Work directly with attorneys and clients to identify where legal service delivery breaks down and understand how software contributes to those gaps.
- Convert interviews, support requests, usage data, and workflow observations into a prioritized backlog with clear tradeoffs between bugs, usability improvements, and new capabilities.
- Own features end-to-end: problem definition, solution scoping, requirements writing, acceptance criteria, and engineering collaboration through launch.
- Apply strong product and design judgment to complex workflows using wireframes and lightweight prototypes to validate ideas.
- Test deliverables, catch edge cases, coordinate releases, and follow up with users to confirm problems are solved.
- Measure impact on legal service delivery (matter turnaround time, attorney manual work reduction, client handoffs, communication clarity) and use results to inform next priorities.
- Keep founders, engineers, product operations, and attorneys aligned on priorities and decisions while maintaining structure for rapid execution.
You should have at least 3 years of product management experience building software with engineering teams, with concrete examples of features you took from discovery to launch. You need excellent product judgment to distinguish recurring problems from one-offs, identify minimal viable solutions, and make hard prioritization calls. A high execution bar is essential: you take ownership, move quickly, notice details, and close loops independently.
Strong user research skills and empathy for people doing complex work are critical. You ask good questions, observe actual behavior, and translate insights into concrete decisions. Communication must be clear—specs concise, decisions understandable, and collaboration effective across engineers, lawyers, and founders.
Technical fluency is required: you can discuss APIs, integrations, data flows, and AI product limitations with engineers (you do not need to be a software engineer). You must be comfortable with ambiguity and changing priorities at an early-stage company, making progress with incomplete information and updating your view as evidence emerges.
Especially valuable experience includes: building internal tools, operations software, or customer experiences for service-delivery businesses (especially complex professional workflows); working on AI products and evaluating reliability, user trust, and human involvement; using analytics, SQL, prototyping tools, or AI coding tools to investigate and test; startup experience or familiarity with legal, financial, or document-heavy workflows (legal background not required).
The company offers market-competitive compensation and equity. Offices are in San Francisco and New York City with preference for candidates in either location, though strong remote candidates are considered. The culture emphasizes urgency while generally keeping weekends free.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 3 years of product management experience building software with an engineering team
- Demonstrated track record of taking products or features from problem discovery to launch with measurable results
- Excellent product judgment and ability to distinguish recurring user problems from one-off requests
- High execution bar: ownership, speed, attention to detail, and ability to close loops independently
- Strong user research skills and empathy for people doing complicated work
- Clear writing and communication skills; ability to work effectively with engineers, lawyers, and founders
- Technical fluency (APIs, integrations, data flows, AI product limitations); software engineering background not required
- Comfort with ambiguity and changing priorities in early-stage environments
- Preferred: experience with internal tools, operations software, service-delivery workflows, AI products, analytics/SQL/prototyping tools, startup experience, or legal/financial domain knowledge
