Slash is hiring its first dedicated design hire as Founding Product Designer. This is a ground-floor opportunity to set the visual and product language across the entire company—from core banking product to marketing site to social presence.
Slash is a fast-growing fintech (founded 2021, Series C $100M led by Ribbit Capital) that powers over $10B annually in business purchasing. The company is building industry-specific business banking that combines traditional banking reliability with tailored features that make businesses more efficient and competitive.
In this role, you'll own product design end-to-end: taking problems from founders, PMs, and engineers and carrying them from first sketch through shipped product. You'll establish the design system and visual/interaction language for the core product, ensuring consistency as the design team scales. You'll also direct Slash's visual identity—brand, marketing site, decks, event graphics, and social content—doing hands-on illustration, layout, and original creative work.
You'll work directly with founders and engineering with no layers between you and decisions that matter. The role emphasizes rapid prototyping and iteration: pair with engineers to test ideas quickly, get real product in front of customers, and use AI tools (Claude, Cursor) to clarify problems and explore directions before high-fidelity design. You'll validate decisions by talking directly to customers.
As the first design hire, you'll also build the design function itself—setting tools, process, quality standards, and hiring the designers who join after you.
You need strong product design fundamentals (interaction design, systems thinking, ability to simplify complex financial workflows without dumbing them down). Beyond UI, you need real creative range: graphic design, illustration, art direction, or similar background demonstrated in your portfolio. You should have a track record of ownership—specific projects carried from ambiguous problem through shipped success. You're energized by operating without a playbook and building process alongside product. Active use of AI tools is expected. Experience at a fast-growing startup in a founding or early design role is a strong plus. You must be based in San Francisco; the company has a strong in-person culture.
