P-1 AI is building Archie, an AI engineer agent for the physical world that performs real mechanical and electrical engineering work at a junior engineer level. The company recently closed a $50M Series A led by NEA with board participation from former GE CEO Jeff Immelt and AI luminaries from Anthropic and Nominal. As the founding product designer, you will define the interaction model and user experience for a new category: AI agents that collaborate with human engineers on real, high-stakes engineering work. This is not a chatbot interface—it's about designing how engineers assign work to Archie, review and inspect his reasoning, compare alternatives, and collaborate seamlessly within existing engineering workflows and tools. Key responsibilities include: - Design the core UX for work assignment, result review, reasoning inspection, and human-AI collaboration patterns - Conduct user research with mechanical and electrical engineers; observe real usage and iterate based on feedback - Create wireframes, prototypes, and product flows that turn complex AI capabilities into clear, legible experiences - Build P-1 AI's design system, visual language, and interaction patterns with principles emphasizing functionalism, density, explicitness, and verbosity over opacity - Partner closely with frontend engineers and AI researchers to ship quickly and refine through user feedback cycles - Make critical product decisions about what Archie exposes vs. hides, when to ask for help, and how to communicate uncertainty in trust-critical workflows You should have a strong portfolio demonstrating interaction design for technical, complex domains. You excel at working from first principles without existing category templates, moving fluidly between sketches and implementation details, and thriving on messy, technical user feedback. Experience designing for expert users, mechanical engineers, or industrial workflows is valuable. Location: Hybrid. Primary office in San Mateo, CA with one week per six on-site; remote work available for US/Canada-based candidates. Relocation support offered.
