As a FinOps Advocate, you will be a practitioner-focused technical authority reporting directly to the CEO and Co-Founder. This is a hybrid role based in the Dumbo, Brooklyn office. You will be one of two Advocates hired; this position focuses deeply on AWS, while a parallel role covers GCP and Azure.
Your responsibilities include:
- Joining customer evaluations as the technical authority on AWS cost management, from initial discovery through contract close
- Walking prospects and CFOs through their AWS billing data to identify real savings opportunities
- Running proof-of-concept engagements and providing honest technical guidance, including when North may not be the right fit
- Supporting new customers in building FinOps practices around the North platform post-signature
- Identifying stalled adoption accounts, diagnosing root causes, and addressing issues before renewal conversations
- Pressure-testing product releases against real customer environments and flagging gaps in AWS coverage
- Collaborating with the Principal Product Manager and CEO on roadmap prioritization, bringing field evidence and customer patterns
- Representing North publicly through writing, speaking, and community involvement
You will operate in a pre-sales capacity without a quota, functioning as a technical authority rather than a traditional closer. Your influence will come from deep expertise, credibility with both finance and engineering teams, and strong written communication. The role is still being defined, requiring comfort with ambiguity and the ability to shape it as the company scales.
Requirements:
- 5+ years running cloud FinOps, either as head of a practice within a company or in product management at a vendor
- Ownership of cost outcomes (not advisory involvement)
- Deep AWS fluency including Cost and Usage Report, Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, EDP negotiation, and understanding of billing data gaps
- Experience designing tagging and allocation schemes that work with engineering teams
- Credibility with both finance and engineering audiences; ability to move between them seamlessly
- Comfort operating in pre-sales without a quota, as a technical authority
- Track record of converting customer patterns into shipped product requirements
- Willingness to disagree with product decisions and make the case directly to leadership
- Strong written communication skills
- Comfort with ambiguity and undefined role scope
Nice to have:
- FinOps Foundation certification or active community involvement
- Perspective on AI, GPU, and inference spend
- Familiarity with FOCUS and billing data normalization across providers
- Working knowledge of GCP or Azure
- Early-stage company experience with undefined roles
