Coinbase is seeking a FCM Tech Lead to architect and lead the technical evolution of Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), a CFTC-regulated Futures Commission Merchant. This is a hands-on technical leadership role spanning the entire FCM lifecycle: market data, order entry and routing, settlement and money movement, back-office reporting, and in-house risk and liquidation systems.
You will own design and architecture across the FCM core platform, driving a major replatforming initiative onto next-gen architecture while reducing legacy vendor dependencies. This is a rare opportunity to re-architect a regulated trading platform from the inside with startup-level ownership and Coinbase's scale and resources.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning end-to-end design and architecture for market data, order routing, settlement, reporting, and risk systems
- Leading the next-generation replatforming effort to improve stability, reliability, and reduce legacy dependencies
- Setting technical standards through code reviews, design reviews, and architectural guidance
- Identifying and paying down high-impact technical debt
- Cross-functional partnership with Product, Risk, Operations, Finance, and Compliance to deliver correct, auditable systems
- Mentoring engineers and acting as a force multiplier for engineering quality across the team
Required experience includes extensive backend engineering with demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems. You must have direct FCM or derivatives experience with hands-on ownership of at least one part of the futures trade lifecycle (settlement, clearing, margin/risk, order entry/routing, market data, or back-office). Deep proficiency in modern backend languages (Go preferred; Java or similar) and event-driven, high-availability architectures is essential. Experience in regulated or financial environments (CFTC/NFA or comparable) where correctness, auditability, and reliability are critical is required. You should have a track record delivering end-to-end solutions from scoping and architecture through implementation, monitoring, and iteration, including replatforming efforts while maintaining hands-on coding and raising quality standards. Familiarity with Ion XTP is a plus. Responsible use of generative AI to improve workflow efficiency while maintaining human oversight is expected.
