Expo is building mobile AI infrastructure for developers to create, ship, and operate great apps. The company is a remote-first, intentionally small team focused on hiring exceptional talent and maintaining high talent density.
As a hands-on Recruiter, you will be the core driver of Expo's hiring strategy and people systems. You'll work directly with leaders across Engineering, GTM, Product, and G&A to define what exceptional performance looks like, source difficult-to-find talent, design hiring processes that reveal authentic ability, and close candidates who raise the company's level.
Key responsibilities include:
Recruiting: Personally source, recruit, assess, and close candidates for critical roles. Build a proactive sourcing engine that reaches passive candidates. Partner with leaders to understand business needs and define exceptional performance through scorecards, interview formats, and competencies. Redesign interviews to reveal authentic ability, judgment, ownership, and working style through work reviews, technical discussions, and demonstrations rather than traditional questions. Build long-term relationships with exceptional people before roles open.
People & Onboarding: Design onboarding that helps new hires quickly understand Expo's products, customers, culture, and expectations. Partner with managers on clear ramp plans. Create lightweight systems for feedback, performance, compensation, and career development. Coach leaders on hiring, team design, role clarity, and difficult performance decisions. Partner with Finance on headcount planning and revenue-per-employee goals. Identify organizational complexity and create leverage through better systems or automation.
You are a builder who happens to work in recruiting. You create systems, experiment with technology and AI, and personally tackle hard problems. You have recruited exceptional technical talent at high-growth technology companies, ideally with experience in developer tools, infrastructure, open source, or deeply technical products. You earn credibility with engineers and product leaders through genuine curiosity about their craft. You excel at finding passive candidates, developing relationships, and moving them from first conversation through close. You have strong judgment about people and can distinguish interview performance from sustained impact. You're comfortable challenging hiring managers or leaving roles open when the talent bar isn't met. You prefer evidence over interview theater—seeing what candidates have built, how they think, and how they work. You communicate clearly, give candid feedback, and care deeply about building an exceptional company.
