FlixTrain is seeking an Expert Onboard Technology to own the complete on-board technology ecosystem that shapes how passengers connect, navigate, and experience every journey. You will be responsible for WLAN, network infrastructure, on-board units, and mobile devices for train staff—technologies that are becoming a critical competitive differentiator as connectivity innovations like Starlink redefine what's possible in rail.
As a central technical authority within the Product Development team (Rolling Stock & Maintenance), you will work closely with Operations, Customer Product, FlixTech, and external partners including Talgo, ECMs, and suppliers like Icomera and Advantech to ensure on-board hardware delivers exceptional passenger experience, smooth operations, and a productive environment for crew.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the entire on-board technology ecosystem and continuously pushing beyond the status quo
- Serving as the primary technical contact for all on-board systems; evaluating specifications, weighing trade-offs, and making well-reasoned decisions
- Monitoring performance of on-board technology, identifying issues early, and driving improvements that make every journey smoother
- Leading cross-functional projects around connectivity, network performance, and mobile device integration with clear focus on impact
- Defining technical specifications and network architectures that are both ambitious and implementable, ensuring seamless integration with the vehicle fleet
- Developing test scenarios and functional validations—especially at critical customer and certification touchpoints—to ensure solutions work in real-world operations
- Monitoring emerging technologies (5G, IoT, Starlink) and translating insights into concrete recommendations for FlixTrain's technology roadmap

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- More than two years of practical experience in network architecture, WLAN systems, or Mobile Device Management—ideally in rail vehicles or similarly complex technical environments
- Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex network systems under time pressure
- Ability to take ownership: bringing topics to completion independently and leading cross-functional initiatives across different teams and disciplines
- Clear and persuasive communication with both technical experts and non-technical stakeholders, without sacrificing precision
- Fluent German and English (negotiation-level proficiency required for work with international team, German suppliers, and regulatory bodies)
- Advantageous: experience with rail vehicle system suppliers and familiarity with contractual, technical, and regulatory aspects of the rail industry
