You will join a backend-focused engineering role within a squad-based structure, working closely with team members and a Staff engineer. The company operates in an agile "build it and run it" environment where engineering teams own the full lifecycle of their products—building, launching, monitoring, and supporting them.
Key responsibilities include:
- Producing clean, consistent, and well-organized code while crafting outstanding products
- Facilitating meaningful discussions around complex technical issues
- Suggesting and implementing improvements to existing designs and architecture for quarter-bounded projects and mission-critical areas
- Exploring technologies with significant potential impact for the team
- Contributing actively to high-impact chaos mitigation and incident response
- Identifying and advocating for prioritization of tasks that optimize delivery
- Demonstrating end-to-end product thinking with a fullstack mindset
Back Market's technical environment is undergoing a radical transformation from a monolith to a distributed, service-oriented architecture. You'll work with a modern backend stack including Python (FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Celery), Golang, and Django (being phased out). Data infrastructure includes PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, RabbitMQ, and BigQuery. The platform runs on GCP with Kubernetes, Docker, Datadog, ArgoCD, and CircleCI.
The role requires strong English communication as you'll collaborate with an international team distributed across the US, France, Spain, and Japan.
Hybrid policy: 3 days per week at the Paris office with Monday mandatory. Additional flexibility includes 2 remote days per week and 1 remote work week per quarter, plus 3 flex days annually.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of backend development experience
- Strong system design skills
- Experience with microservices and distributed systems
- Deep understanding of data architecture and APIs
- Experience with performance optimization and scalability
- Solid experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (frontend capabilities)
- Ability to independently build frontend features
- Understanding of state management, routing, and API integration
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to navigate ambiguity across technical domains
