Perplexity AI is seeking an Engineering Site Lead to establish and scale its London office, serving as the strategic leader for the company's European expansion. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build Perplexity's technical organization in one of the world's leading tech hubs.
You will serve as the face of Perplexity in London, responsible for establishing the site's culture, building and directly managing one or more infrastructure teams (5-15+ engineers), and driving technical excellence across AI infrastructure systems. You'll report to senior leadership and work cross-functionally with global engineering teams.
Key responsibilities include:
**Site Leadership & Culture**: Establish Perplexity's London office from the ground up, setting cultural foundations and operating principles. Serve as the primary point of contact for all London-based activities, represent the site in company-wide strategic discussions, and drive local community engagement and brand presence in the London and European tech ecosystem.
**Technical Leadership**: Directly manage and mentor infrastructure and AI infrastructure teams. Set technical direction and strategy for London-based initiatives aligned with company-wide goals. Drive architectural decisions and technical excellence, ensuring robust systems for deployment, monitoring, scalability, and reliability of infrastructure supporting AI/ML workloads. Collaborate with global engineering leaders on technical standards and cross-site initiatives.
**Team Building & Talent**: Build and scale high-performing infrastructure teams through strategic hiring. Develop talent acquisition strategy for the London site in partnership with recruiting. Create career development frameworks and foster technical mentorship and knowledge sharing.
**Cross-functional Collaboration**: Partner with Product, Engineering, and Research teams globally to understand infrastructure needs. Coordinate with other site leads to ensure effective cross-site collaboration and contribute to company-wide infrastructure strategy.
Required qualifications: 10+ years software engineering experience with 5+ years in infrastructure/cloud/AI infrastructure roles; 3+ years people management experience building and scaling teams; proven track record establishing or growing an engineering site; deep technical expertise in distributed systems, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and infrastructure automation; experience with GPU infrastructure, ML training/inference pipelines, and model serving at scale; strong understanding of Kubernetes, Terraform, container orchestration, and CI/CD systems; ability to set technical vision and drive execution across multiple teams; excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; experience in fast-paced, high-growth tech companies.
