GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Trusted Agentic Development team within the Developer Experience group. This team builds platforms that help GitLab engineers work confidently with AI agents—addressing a critical gap where agents can generate passing test suites for software that doesn't actually work as intended.
In this role, you'll build and lead a team focused on four key areas: (1) validation that confirms agent-generated code does what was intended, (2) mid-loop feedback to help agents self-correct toward working software, (3) language-aware approaches starting with Rust, Ruby, and Go, and (4) real measurement of engineer trust and adoption.
Key responsibilities include hiring and developing engineers who practice agentic development; setting technical direction in an undefined space by partnering with your team; keeping focus on high-impact problems; earning adoption through relationships and a useful product rather than mandate; measuring adoption through real usage and treating adopters as design partners; staying close to technical work through architecture discussions and design reviews; and running the team with clear goals, direct feedback, and ownership of complex work.
You'll bring direct experience using AI agents to build software, including understanding why passing tests don't guarantee working features. You've led engineering teams through ambiguous, early-stage problems where the right approach wasn't yet known. You drive adoption through influence and useful products, not mandates. You have technical depth to engage credibly in architecture discussions and earn senior engineer trust. You've built accountable, high-performing teams with strong hiring, development, and performance management practices. You communicate clearly in all-remote, asynchronous environments and align with GitLab's collaborative values.
