GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Dedicated Infrastructure team, which builds and operates large-scale distributed infrastructure for GitLab Dedicated, a hosted SaaS platform. The team focuses on availability, security, fleet management, automated provisioning across tenants, and self-service platforms that enable feature teams to own their services in production.
In this role, you will combine hands-on technical leadership with team development. You'll partner with the team's Product Manager to set clear priorities and deliver with quality and speed. Key responsibilities include maintaining 99.9% availability for Dedicated infrastructure, strengthening security, and automating operations to support more tenants at scale. You'll give your team clear direction and meaningful feedback, build shared ownership of development and operations, and improve the platforms and tools your team owns to enable self-service workflows.
You'll recruit, onboard, and develop productive team members, supporting their growth and accountability. You'll lead by example with proofs of concept and AI-assisted approaches, simplifying processes and automating repetitive work. You'll model effective incident management, lead timely resolution and escalation, and document and teach best practices across GitLab. You'll use data to prioritize work, quantify impact, and manage risk and technical debt, explaining technical trade-offs to stakeholders.
GitLab's culture emphasizes AI as a core productivity multiplier, with all team members expected to incorporate AI into daily workflows. The company operates with asynchronous collaboration, autonomy, accountability, and transparency.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Track record of building and owning large-scale distributed services, with technical depth to evaluate architecture and guide technical strategy
- Experience with fleet management, Terraform, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and automated provisioning at scale of 20+ clusters
- Experience owning services with 99.99% availability SLOs and understanding of operational practices needed to sustain them
- Experience using AI tools to improve team productivity, with lessons learned from both successes and missteps
- Experience building and managing accountable, high-performing teams, including addressing underperformance and making difficult performance decisions
- Ability to lead complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated Technical Program Manager
- Experience leading distributed, remote teams effectively
