Salary: USD 75,600 - 100,800 / annual
Lila Sciences is seeking an Engineer I for Research Operations to join their high-throughput laboratory automation team on a second shift (2:00 PM – 10:00 PM). The role focuses on executing automated and manual laboratory workflows using integrated workcells and liquid-handling platforms such as Hamilton, Lynx, and Echo systems.
Key responsibilities include operating and monitoring high-throughput automated workflows, preparing and organizing reagents, samples, labware, and consumables, and following standard operating procedures to ensure accurate and reproducible results. You will perform real-time workflow monitoring, identify and troubleshoot equipment or process issues, and escalate complex problems to senior engineers and scientists. Routine equipment maintenance, cleaning, and readiness checks are part of the role to ensure reliable automation system operation.
You will review quality-control outputs, maintain data integrity and sample traceability through accurate documentation, and provide clear end-of-shift handoffs to incoming teams. Collaboration with scientists, automation engineers, and operational teams is essential to communicate workflow status, open issues, and follow-up actions. The role also includes contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and cross-training efforts that strengthen workflow efficiency and operational coverage.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or a related scientific or engineering field, or equivalent education and laboratory experience. Minimum 3 years of relevant co-op and industry laboratory experience is required, with hands-on proficiency in core techniques such as pipetting, reagent preparation, and aseptic technique in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or Protein Science.
Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to organize work and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment are essential. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are required. Bonus qualifications include experience with automated liquid handlers, high-throughput production laboratory environments, quality-control data interpretation, laboratory information management systems, laboratory automation troubleshooting, protein purification techniques, cell culture, DNA/RNA workflows, or lipid nanoparticle formulation.
