Gusto is seeking an experienced Employee Relations Partner to serve as a trusted advisor to frontline managers and leadership on complex, high-stakes employee matters. This role sits at the intersection of people advocacy and organizational risk management, requiring regular collaboration with Legal, People Partners, and business leadership to resolve sensitive workplace issues and high-risk performance cases. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing all aspects of employee concerns and workplace conflict resolution through investigations, developing disciplinary action plans, and mediating conversations. You will coach and support managers in setting clear performance expectations, providing regular feedback, and addressing development needs. The role requires maintaining up-to-date knowledge of HR regulations and ensuring manager adherence to Gusto policies and legal requirements. You'll partner closely with Legal and People Partners to assess organizational risk on escalated cases, navigate ambiguous high-stakes situations with sound judgment, and maintain thorough, legally defensible documentation. A key responsibility is identifying patterns across cases and surfacing systemic risks to People leadership before escalation. The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 4 years in an HR Generalist role or 2 years in Employee Relations/HR Business Partner roles. You should have demonstrated experience handling complex, sensitive ER matters with discretion and composure under pressure. Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with Legal teams, exceptional knowledge of HR best practices and employment laws, and excellent coaching and mentoring abilities are essential. Analytical skills to interpret ER metrics and propose actionable insights are required. Gusto supports over 500,000 small businesses with payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR services. The company maintains teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, and emphasizes an AI-forward mindset—thoughtfully using AI tools to work more effectively while keeping humans at the center of consequential decisions. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
