Apex manufactures satellite buses (spacecraft platforms) at scale for the commercial space industry. As an Electro-Optical Engineer, you will own sensor products across the complete development lifecycle—from concept through production—acting as the technical authority that carries sensors from architecture through qualification and into the field. You will manage system ownership of sensor products, including conceptualization, architecture, design, analysis, prototyping, qualification, and production support. As the Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) during production, you'll provide technical solutions and guidance when issues arise. You'll manage project budget, schedule, and tasking within a multidisciplinary engineering team. Test engineering responsibilities include owning verification and validation activities for sensor subsystem requirements, developing and executing qualification and test campaigns (including test plans, procedures, and reports), collaborating on test stations and ground support equipment, and performing failure investigations with root cause analyses to inform future designs. Technically, you'll perform system- and component-level trade studies to optimize performance, cost, schedule, and risk. You'll collaborate across structures, thermal, optics, avionics, software, GNC, manufacturing, mission assurance, and supply chain to develop integrated sensor solutions. You'll present technical work at design reviews and create thorough engineering documentation. Required: Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Software Engineering (or related discipline); hands-on experience developing, prototyping, integrating, and/or testing multidisciplinary systems; demonstrated hardware, project, or product ownership; strong test engineering fundamentals; leadership and organizational skills; comfort with clean-sheet subsystem architecture; self-motivation in a fast-paced environment. Preferred: 1–2 years aerospace/automotive/technical product development experience; Master's degree; sensor system design/test experience; Design for Manufacturing (DFM/DFMA) knowledge; satellite systems familiarity; full hardware product lifecycle experience; project management tools proficiency. Apex is a well-funded ($500M+) commercial space startup offering equity, 100% company-paid healthcare, 15–20+ days vacation, 10 paid holidays, 8 weeks paid parental leave, 401(k) matching, catered lunch, and a collaborative Playa Vista office.
