Iambic Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotech company founded in 2020 and based in San Diego, is seeking a Director or Senior Director of Immunology to lead the Biology group. This scientific leader will define and execute biology strategies for small-molecule immunology discovery programs, translating disease and immune biology into robust in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo evidence packages that guide medicinal chemistry from hit identification through development candidate nomination and IND-enabling studies.
The Director will lead cross-functional project teams and set scientific direction across Chemistry, DMPK, Safety, Translational, and Computational teams. Key responsibilities include: (1) Program leadership from target validation through lead optimization and IND-enabling studies, integrating disease biology with SAR, DMPK/PK/PD, safety, target engagement, and translational biomarkers; (2) In vitro and ex vivo strategy using primary human immune cells, whole blood/PBMCs, and tissues to assess mechanism, potency, selectivity, and immune function; (3) In vivo and translational strategy including efficacy, mechanistic, and PK/PD studies with critical interpretation of results and translation to human biomarkers; (4) Team and partner leadership, including managing and developing scientists, overseeing CROs, and fostering an inclusive, high-trust team environment.
Required qualifications include a PhD in immunology or related field with 15+ years of relevant experience, including significant industry experience in small-molecule discovery. Candidates must have a track record leading cross-functional small-molecule programs from hit identification through development candidate nomination, with deep expertise in innate and/or adaptive immunology and extensive experience with primary-cell and ex vivo studies including multiparameter flow cytometry. Experience designing and interpreting in vivo efficacy, pharmacodynamic, and mechanistic studies is essential, as is experience developing and transferring robust assay cascades to CROs or automation platforms. Strong people leadership and executive communication skills are required.
Preferred qualifications include experience with patient-derived samples, translational biomarkers, high-dimensional data, and familiarity with AI/ML-enabled drug discovery. Iambic's platform has demonstrated delivery of new drug candidates to human clinical trials with unprecedented speed across multiple target classes. The company offers competitive pay, company-paid healthcare, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) matching, uncapped vacation, and operates from a state-of-the-art San Diego facility with onsite gym and dining.
