Thumbtack is seeking a Director of Talent & Organizational Development to lead the design and execution of talent systems, leadership practices, and organizational capabilities across the company. Reporting to the Head of People, you will own a multi-year strategy spanning performance management, career architecture, talent and succession planning, leadership development, organizational design, and enterprise change.
You will lead a small team of experienced practitioners while partnering directly with senior executives on Thumbtack's highest-priority talent challenges. This is a hands-on role requiring comfort moving between company-wide strategy and detailed execution—advising leaders, designing frameworks and operating rhythms, building development experiences, and translating work into stronger performance, deeper talent density, and clearer growth paths.
Key responsibilities include: setting and owning Thumbtack's multi-year Talent and Organizational Development strategy with measurable outcomes; evolving performance management to strengthen goal setting, expectations, feedback, calibration, and accountability; maintaining and evolving career architecture including role/level frameworks and career paths; leading talent planning and succession practices to assess talent, identify capability gaps, and accelerate high-potential employees; designing scalable development experiences that close capability gaps and strengthen manager effectiveness; applying an AI-first approach across the portfolio to improve insight, personalization, and scale; and establishing an integrated measurement framework using business and talent data to evaluate impact.
You bring 10+ years of experience across talent management, organizational development, learning and development, or related disciplines, with 4+ years leading and developing people. You have deep expertise in talent management (performance, career architecture, talent planning, succession), demonstrated strength in leadership development and organizational effectiveness, and a track record of designing and implementing scalable talent solutions with clear business outcomes. You are credible with senior leaders, can lead through ambiguity and influence without formal authority, and have an AI-first approach to work with hands-on experience building multi-step workflows. You combine a player-coach orientation with an analytical mindset, comfortable grounding solutions in adult-learning and talent-management practices and using data to improve outcomes.
